Геомембрана

Geomembrane is a very low permeability synthetic membrane liner or barrier used to control fluid migration in a man-made project, structure, or system. They are made from thin continuous polymeric sheets and are a crucial component in modern geotechnical and environmental engineering.

Core Functions:

Containment: To securely hold liquids, sludges, or solids.

Isolation: To separate contaminants from the surrounding environment, protecting soil and groundwater.

Lining: To create an impermeable layer within a structure.

Applications and Uses:

1. Environmental Protection

Landfills: This is one of the most critical uses. Geomembranes are used as base liners and final caps to prevent leachate (contaminated liquid from waste) from polluting underlying soil and groundwater.

Wastewater Treatment Lagoons: They line ponds and tanks that hold industrial, agricultural, or municipal wastewater, preventing seepage into the environment.

Potable Water Storage: Used to line reservoirs, drinking water storage ponds, and canals to prevent water loss through seepage and protect the water from external contamination.

Hazardous & Industrial Waste Containment: Lining structures that hold fly ash, chemical waste, or other dangerous materials.

2. Water Management

Aquaculture & Fish Ponds: Used as liners for fish and shrimp farms to maintain a consistent water level, control the environment, and simplify cleaning.

Irrigation Canals and Ponds: Lining canals and storage ponds to conserve water by significantly reducing losses due to infiltration into the ground.

Stormwater Management: Used in detention and retention ponds to manage runoff and prevent contaminated water from seeping into the soil.

3. Mining Industry (Mining Leach Pads)

Heap Leach Pads: Used to line pads where ore is piled for chemical extraction (e.g., gold, copper). The geomembrane captures the precious metal-bearing solution for processing while preventing toxic chemicals from entering the ecosystem.

Tailings Dams: Lining impoundments that store leftover processed materials (tailings) from mining operations to prevent the release of often highly toxic and acidic runoff.

4. Civil Engineering and Construction

Tunnel and Underground Construction: Used as a waterproofing layer behind segmental linings or within shotcrete to prevent water ingress.

Beneath Highways and Landfills: Used as a moisture barrier to prevent subsoil erosion and stabilize the ground (often used in conjunction with geotextiles).

5. Agriculture

Water Reservoirs: Lining farm ponds to ensure a reliable water supply for crops and livestock.

Liners for Silage Pits: Preventing nutrient-rich seepage from silage from contaminating nearby water sources.
